Laura Millard was born in Calgary, Alberta
in 1961. Before completing her MFA at Concordia University, Montreal,
she received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
Her work has been widely exhibited across Canada and has been collected
by corporations such as TD Bank and Fidelity Investments as well as
Department of Foreign Affairs and Canada Council Art Bank. She is
currently Chair of Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of
Art and Design. Millard’s images of waterfalls are split-second
captures that are digitally altered, then blown up and over-painted.
By conflating photography with the meticulous, time consuming act
of hand rendering, Millard blurs their readability and slows down
the act of looking. In 2006 Unesco chose to reproduce her image Lac
des Arcs: Skate II for their annual Christmas card.
